Career Questions and Answers

Dave M.
Which career should I pursue? The one thay pays? Or the one I would enjoy more?
Asked by Dave M.
Please help me consider my college path!!!! I've been doing a great deal of research lately into colleges, majors, and careers. Before I make my decision on a school, I need to figure out my major. I'm currently a mechanical engineering major, and I don't mind it. I'm good at it, I just sometimes find it boring and uneventful. I also have interest in the fields of Graphic Design/Animation/Media/Visualization. This is something I took classes on in highschool, and loved. I like the ability to be creative, and to create things that are interesting. I think it would be a good career path for me. However, my concern is that It does not pay as well as mechanical engineering in most cases. I would like to live a comfortable lifestyle, and be able to afford things. I'm just struggling with whether I should choose a career path that I can see myself enjoying each day (Graphic Design, etc.), or a career path that may become tiresome, yet will pay more (Mechanical Engineering). Also a huge concern of mine is college life. I will be going away to college next fall, and I want to make sure that I will have a good college life. I want to be well rounded in school, and have time to be social. My concern is that should i choose engineering, I would not have any free time for being social, and doing other activities. And I'm not sure what to expect from an engineering program at a university. I was a straight A student in regular level classes senior year. I've always done good in school. The bottom line is i just want to make sure that I have the best college life, and entire life, that I can. Thanks

I didn't even read your whole question but the answer is most definitely the career that you enjoy. I thought that was untrue and found out the hard way.

Well only you can decide what is right for you. However, you should consider the different types of graphic design jobs in the world, you could get a job doing advertising (commercials, billboard designing, company ads, etc.), film, tv, video games. Some of those people do make bank bucks. but you have to work hard, and you probably won't just walk into a high paying graphics design job straight out of college. However, it doesn't necessarily pay you minimum wage. My best recommendation is to talk with a school counselor and tell them your concerns. and think on their advice. If it were me, i'd go for graphic design because its what you want to do, and you will have a much more fulfilling happy life if you enjoy what you do, you only get one go around, however i'd keep in mind that when you first start out that you won't be able to just walk into a high paying graphics design job. Your school should give you experience and while at school you can create a portfolio (even if it is virtual) of your work to present to prospective employers, the college should equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed at either career path. plus i'd be worried that if i picked engineering i'd wonder forever what my life would have been like if i had picked graphic design. just some things to think on. But remember only you can make the choice about what is right for you. TBP
