How much should I expect to make my first couple of weeks as a new waitress?
Asked by Whooptadooda
I have not apply for one yet but am thinking about working as a waitress. I have no experience in waiting tables. Also which restaurant would be best to apply at? I am planning on applying at P.F Changs, Cheesecake factory, or Applebees

The first couple of weeks, you'll make next to nothing because no restaurant manager lets an inexperienced server on the floor without intensive training. You're going to have to trail the lead server for those two weeks at least. Those places are not good choices for someone with no experience. They're too high volume, and too fast paced and you are not likely to get a job without experience. Big chains are about table turn over and individual servers are expected to handle large sections from the get go. For a first time server job, try for day shifts at smaller places where you can cut your teeth. Those are the shifts that experienced workers don't want because they are slow so you have a better chance. There's not much money but there is an opportunity to learn. It's easier to break into that cruel business by being a hostess or busser.

It depends on lots of things. What part of the country do you live in? What part of town are these restaurants in? How busy are the these restaurants? How many tables are in a typical section at these restaurants-- naturally, if you have 6 tables, you're going to make more than if you have 2. The only sure way to know is to ask the people that work at the restaurants you're going to apply at (don't ask the managers, ask the servers. The managers will feed you a line of bull to get you in the job... they're always looking for fresh meat).

I am a waitress at a small chineese restraunt and i anly work 3 hours a night and make $40-65 a night I love it. Places like that might not hire you without experience try a smaller company then work your way up

Depends on where you live .. where you work. The best way to MAXIMIZE your potential tip earnings though is to smile.. be very polite.. listen carefully when ppl are placing their orders. Talk to the children (if there are any) offer crayons & coloring sheets to the children (if the restaurant has them). I've waitressed most of my life and I love it. Since I'm a parent as well.. I know how it can be when taking children..especially young ones out to eat. Always remember to check on ur customers as far as if thier meal is ok.. if they need more drinkage..etc. As far as which place to apply for.. that's entirely up to yourself. Definately avoid fast food restaurants if you're looking for tip cash.
