What should be emphasized when applyng for a retail position?
Asked by Zia X
For instance, I have retail experience, but its old, so should I add it or just skip it? Also I'm in school, should I mention that? What do these people want to hear?

Best Answer:
They want to hear that you've had experience dealing with customer service etc.
You can communicate with a various people of different ages.
You can deal with 'trouble' customers.
I would put your old experience.
Good luck

Retail people want to hear that you are willing to work holidays, evenings, and weekends. That's it.

You should mention your previous retail experience unless it was a really, really long time ago and no longer relevant. Employers want to know if you have relevant experience.
You should also mention that you are a student to avoid scheduling conflicts with your new employer.
Prospective employers want to know that you are motivated, reliable and honest.

Definitely, your flexibility in schedule and being a "team player". Retailer employers sometimes want to see that you have what it takes to stay and grow within their company (no job hoppers- people who bounce around not holding a job for even 3 mos. at a time). Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I've worked in retail since I was 16 (I'm 28 now). I've worked at Target, Nordstrom, Best Buy (off and on for 5 years - Don't Work there!!: bestbuysux.org -and theyre all alike..no seriously.. all of them - politics) and I've been working now at Bloomingdales (Yes, the largest one) since last May, I'm a Central Executive. Hope this helps. :o) um>>yeah>> sorry for the resume...lol

You should emphasize the characteristics and skills that uniquely qualify your for the position you are seeking and why this employer should consider hiring you over all the other applicants.
