It sounds like you are just starting school or are trying to decide which program you want. If you get an associates degree in office technology of some type you will be able to obtain an entry level position that pays from 9 to 10 per hour. However, if you add something medical to your credentials you increase your marketability and you wage. Medical Assistants are in high demand and many command a much higher wage and over time move into office management. (My sister has been an Med. Assistant for years and runs the Dr.s office, manages the staff and makes $18. an hour.) Medical billing is also a field that offers lots of opportunity.

You could be a secretary or an administrative assistant in a a large corporation, a small business, a nonprofit, a university, even a government office. In these jobs, at the very least, you will: -- answer the phone a lot and either answer the questions of the callers or direct the callers to other staff, as appropriate -- answer emails and either answer the questions yourself or direct such to other staff, as appropriate -- keep the office filing system in order; when a staff person takes out a file, they will often leave it in a tray, for you to refile later -- retrieve files for staff -- type internal memos and external official correspondence on behalf of other staff members -- put together presentations (probably in Microsoft Powerpoint) -- sit in on meetings, take notes, type these up and distribute them to attendees -- manage at least one database of some kind You will probably also be trained on specific forms of software that a particular department or agency uses.

A:
It is all dependent on what an employer is seeking in a candidate. Some insist on a college degree; others could care less as long as you can do the job. Different companies use different titles for mainly the same job: secretary/administrative assistant/executive assistant. . . .etc., etc. Most end up doing the same tasks.
