Should I put my retail experience on my graphic arts resume?
Asked by kellybear
I am applying for a recent graphic arts position. I looked up graphic arts resumes to get the feel of how am I suppose to write it. But the only thing I got were all examples of people with experience. I have some college education that I was going to add, and inform on the experience I got with it. But I was wondering since I don't have any graphic arts job experience, should I put down my retail experience with local stores instead?

Yes, I'd put it on the job application/resume. It would show the interviewer that you are willing to work and hopefully the stores will give you a good reference!!

Well it's good to have past work experience, but only list them if you think it could apply to your Graphic Arts position and more importantly if you think you will get good references from them. If you don't think you have worthwhile references from your past jobs then there isn't much point in listing those jobs.
The Resume is really important but it is by no means the deal maker. Do put as much effort in it as you can and make it look as good as possible but don't freak out too much about it. Especially for Graphic Arts the best thing you can do is supply a good portfolio. Better yet make an interactive CD and include your resume and past artwork on it. Show off what you can do.
But again, it's what comes AFTER you get their attention that you really need to be able to prove yourself.
