I have retired from the work field, but I have worked in probably every area you can imagine. Lots of years of experience.
1. Dress professionally, not sleezy, just classic.
2. Avoid lots of jewelry, makeup and busy hairdo's.
3. Keep all of your boss' information private. NEVER tell other employees any of his business.
4. Do not date anyone in the company. My daddy always told me never get your meat where you get your bread!
5. At business functions, watch your intake of alcohol.
6. Do not divulge all of your personal info or problems to anyone during breaks or lunch times. They will turn on you everytime!
7. Never discuss salaries with other employees.
8. Do not allow anyone to get away with sexual or mental harrassment.
9. Always arrive a little early to prepare for the day, and do not start shutting down 30 minutes before quitting time.
10. Avoid food and drink at your desk, always, even if permitted.
11. Start each day with a smile and a good morning....sounds like you are on your way! Congrats!

I've been an Executive Assistant for 30 years. Throughout my career I've learned the following:
- Be flexible
- Keep a can-do, upbeat attitude
- Volunteer to assist co-workers
- Be positive
- Never fall into the "it's not my job" attitude.
- Mind your own business (Don't Gossip)
- ALWAYS KEEP A SMILE!

the best way is to sharpen your typing and filing skills, be able to schedule appts, events, etc, prepare reports, and be sharp in word and especially excel. Here are some links from govt and educational websites. Good luck!
Also, keep in mind an employer can be an annoying and pestering son of a gun and may not appreciate you in spite of all you input. Nonetheless, it may keep you from not getting fired to sharpen your skills.

BoPeep is completely right. The only thing I would add is have a willingness to learn new programs, keep your skills up to date by taking one day seminars (most companies will pay for you to do this), and never be afraid to ask for clarification on a project. I'd rather have my assistant ask for help or clarification (because I know that sometimes I am scatter brained...she keeps me together!) than trying to just wing something that doesn't need to be winged. Don't misunderstand me, though, initiative is good!
