What route is more rewarding? To become a Medical Doctor or a Surgical Doctor?
Asked by Kyle B
I am trying to figure out what route would be better when i get to medical school, Medical or Surgery? I do not like being bored, and I love to help people, but im not the best at math. I know u have to be able to measure out meds and remember numbers for certain precedures and thats not a problem. I just cant do like big algebra problems and calculas and stuff like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you do not need to make this decision today. In fact, I would not even think about it until near the end of the 2nd year of med school. You could even wait much later than that as long as you get your surgical rotation in before you need to apply for residency in the 4th year. You need the time and experience to be exposed to both before you make this decision. C'mon now, you are not even in medical school yet.

The reward factor is all based on how much you like your job. Either would be considered "rewarding" in normal terms. Keep in mind that a surgeon is still a medical doctor...

A surgical doctor IS an M.D.
Judging by your words and the way in which they are written, I would think that any career where someone else's health and life are in question, is not a good career choice for you.
"Stuff like that" is the phrase that seals your fate. .
Good luck,

You'll do the same math as nurses do. I believe you must go to medical school then specialize. Don't worry about things so much. You'll surprise yourself. I was sure I'd score higher in English, and low in math and science, but just the opposite was true.
If you've been yelled at by your mom for playing video games too much, this will make her happy. Many surgical procedures require really good hand eye co-ordination because you'll be using a joy stick and monitor!!
Being in the medical field is not as respected as it once was.
Besides people trying to tell you that you can't aren't qualified, etc., you'll find some in your own field will also be negative.
This book applies to nurses , but you'll make use of it I'm certain. You will run into Lateral Violence in any field, particularly medical.
Teaching Cognitive Rehearsal as a Shield for Lateral Violence: An Intervention for Newly Licensed Nurses. This book will help you to be prepared for it, to know what words to use and what attitude to adapt.
Good luck to you, you have my respect for being a medical student.
