Career Questions and Answers
Is a CNA or Nurse's Aide a good career Choice?
Asked by Lilly Ann
I would like to become a Registered Nurse but first I'd like to become a CNA while going to college. Is it worth it? I hear it can be a disgusting job though. It's better than working at the local Mcd's and making minimum wage however.

I would recommend it highly!! There are disgusting parts of every job. If that is a deterrent to taking a job then you definitely do not want to be an RN. If you do want to work in nursing the experience of working as a CNA will be great when you get to the clinical portion of your nursing education. Just to be familiar with the way things run at the hospital will help you. You will also be familiar with the role and hard work the CNA does which will help you to delegate and lead your team well.
I know this from my own experience I am a 3rd semester clinical nursing student. (graduate in December) I came into my nursing education with absolutely no experience in the hospital and my first semester was overwhelming. I had to combine learning nurse function and patient care while I became familiar with the way things work in an acute care setting. Had I been more familiar with it I think I would have picked up on so much more in that first rotation.

The pay for a CNA is not as important as the experience. Any job can be disgusting, including being an RN. Think of it as working up the ladder and building your career. Would you like a supervisor who has not worked in the trenches? There are many people who can use your help. Go for it !

it's a stepping stone into the health field but should not be viewed as an end point.
