Is it bad to call a place to see if theyre hiring?
Asked by Mike M
Do you think its rude to call up a place of employment and ask if they are hiring ? I never thought it was and it hasent been a problem until one guy said if u have to call and ask me that then no we arent. I was just wondering because I have to call because all the places within walking distance are not hiring and i cant take a bus to 1,000 different places just to ask if they are hiring its way easier to call.So my question is ,as i said is it considered rude to a manger of the store?

I don't believe it is rude. If you're looking for a job, I think it's smart. Don't wait for people to come looking for you....make things happen. Don't be rude, but you never know...if you ask if there are any positions open at the company they may say, "why yes, a position just opened up. We haven't even had time to advertise yet." Good luck!

The bottom line is you need a job. It might be rude to harass them, but to inquire about potential openings shouldn't burn any bridges. To some managers, that may even show them that you're willing to take the initiative. At the same time, if you call Bear Stearns or other firms in dire situations and ask if they're hiring, then you should expect to hear the dial tone.

I went down the list of CPA firms in the phone book, you ran into an A**H, who as sorry that his business was mismanaged and not hiring, Do what your are doing and politely, I ask in store if they need a CPA, but politely and never pushy,

Going through the phone book and calling every place to see if they are hiring wouldn't be my first choice. If you don't find a company that is hiring using traditional methods (paper, on-line, etc.) and you have specific companies, or types of companies in mind, then it's how you deliver the message. Asking, "Are you hiring?" is likely to get you a referral to their website or worse. Try this opener: "Hi, My name is John Doe and I have a background in (retail, computer science, construction, whatever your background is) and am interested in the possibility of working with your company. Who would I speak with regarding employment?" You are still likely to find people who will only send you to their website, but good recruiters and/or managers will realize that you have taken the time to reach out to them and shown interest in their company. These are the companies that are always looking for good people.
