My daughters 23 just got master degree in public relations & advertising & cant find job, what should she do??
Asked by deb.mcdonnell
She majored in public relations & advertising just is finishing up her masters degree in the same thing, at Depaul in Chicago. A lot of people with her degree are getting laid off and with the economy, as you know there are not many jobs.

First, these are considered "glamour" jobs and entry-level pay stinks. In a tough economy, companies slash PR and advertising budgets first, so both in-house and PR/ad agencies' staff is being pruned. PR & advert has always been a dicey career, and generally a short-lived one as you are out by the time you are 40, unless you are executive-level by then. What internships has she held? What other experience does she have? References? Portfolio (if her portfolio is thin, she can invent "dummy" copy as long as she identifies them as dummies). Can she apply her experience to marketing (of course, she will be up against MBAs with marketing specializations) where there is slightly better demand? She must figure out a way to slant her experience in as many directions as possible so she can tailor a resume to each specific job available, and she must cast a very wide net if she is determined to work in PR/adv -- apply for jobs from Buffalo to Boise. And she may need to do an internship to get a foot in the door or some experience.

This is one of the most difficult fields in which to find work. See if there are any good employment agencies in her area. She may be able to get in with a company through them and work her way up to where they put her in PR. Also, check Craigslist for your city (just be aware of some of the scam ads). Some places that hire PR people: Hospitals Healthcare agencies/nursing homes/assisted living and retirement communities Community colleges (also jobs for professors if she wants to teach) Unfortunately, she will probably have to do something else and work her way up because they want several years of experience for these jobs. It is the nature of the field.

More then likely she is not looking thoroughly over 60% of jobs are not advertised even though laws say they must be. I would start cold calling (approaching every business that deals with anything to do with her qualification and submitting her qualifications). Start canvassing herself out more through advertising and word of mouth. Use the web, local news papers, start advertising her qualifications by these means.

Your daughter needs to network, get off her keester and reach out to acquaintances, alumni from her alma mater, and any family to get her what she is seeking. Otherwise: Change is as likely to happen for her, as for me to win the Florida Lottery.

She needs to register with at least three employment agencies and also online with yahoo hotjobs and Monster.
