Most companies with UNIX already have an admin and probably train from within. I tried to get training in UNIX and VMS but couldn't find anyone offering classes so just became admin by default since I learned them from other people who knew them.

Not many will hire in one area and train for migration to a different area. You need to learn on your own. There are some companies which offer training, but quality is suspect, so exercise caution. Better learn on your own - OpenSolaris, Linux and BSD can be downloaded and used freely on a PC. Plenty of books and online resources are available. Also for sysadmins, Linux offers the best opportunity due to its market share.

My best advice for you is to stay in the company you're in and get in good with someone in the Admin group. Treat this person as a mentor. Let them know that you have worked in Unix for the past 5 years as a script-er and that you really love it and want to make the jump to Admin and ask them for advice. Then when there's an opening in their department, apply for the job.
