The legal limit for a working week in the UK is 48 hours (averaged over a 17 week period). Many employers state that an average week is 37.5 hours. That said, most employers these days include in their employment contracts a statement along the lines of 'plus any additional hours as deemed necessary by the company this means they can get you to stay longer and not pay you overtime. Some industries have their own special rules too. Practically speaking, most companies work on an 8/8.30 - 6/6.30pm time frame, some keep longer hours and usually the more senior you are, the longer the hours you'll work. The company culture will usually dictate how much of the time is productive, and how much is face time. If you're working shifts, it's not unusual to have 10 or 12 hour shifts, but regulations state a maximum number of hours over week must still apply. If you're under 18, it's illegal to work more than a 40 hour week.
