what does a job in telecommunications mean?

I have a friend who is in it, and I have no idea what he does.

They work in the phone industry. Of course there are tons of different jobs withing telecommunications, so this gives you exactly no information on what your friend actually does.

usually means they're one of those people who call in the middle of dinner and don't take "no" for an answer but it is a vague comment so it could mean anything
