how likely is it to get a job with an LPN degree in a hospital?
Asked by Jessi Z
I have recently started lpn school and i was wondering if it is difficult for an LPN to work in a hospital versus nursing homes. I know a lot of lpn's work in nursing homes but i would love to work in a hospital. Do hospitals hire many lpn's?

Yes mame it is...I started out as a CNA, LPN and now RN. I had a VERY difficult time finding a job in a hospital. For the simple fact that there trying to phase out LPN's in most hospitals. I finally found a job in an LTAC unit. Basically a nursing home-hospital. That salary was just about what I would get in a nursing home. When I tried to go to a "Big" hospital I got $11.00 an/hr. They don't pay anything if you do get to a hospital. Try to go straight for your RN. You'll get a whole lot more respect and make ton's more $$$.

I'm not sure if they hire LPNs but it is worth a shot to find out if they do.

It all depends on the hospital. In the large metropolitan area I live in, LPNs are largely being phased out by hospitals and RNs are becoming more limited to working in clinics and nursing homes. But that may not be true elsewhere. Do some research and look through job postings on hospital websites in your area to see if there are many openings for LPNs or not.

That's the US government outlook. However, I see LPNs being phased out in many hospitals, so I would realize this is location-based.
No matter what, I'd go for the degree BUT plan to do a bridge program to earn my RN at the very least.
You can also contact the HR department of any hospitals you're interested in working in and see what they say about LPNs. Might also ask if there are particular units they hire them for and see if you can do something that appeals to being hired there (maybe an extra course over the summer or something).
Good luck.
