I'd say that if you're interested in retail, find the store with the clothing and air to it that fits you best. If you like punk, go for hot topic. If you like preppy, go for american eagle or abercrombie. If you like eclectic, go for delias.
Also, working at a boutique is also very interesting. You get a more personal experience and usually the air is a lot more relaxing.

Try not to get a dead end job. Get some thing that is part of a company that you may actually want to work for in a future career.

Anything, it's your first job, take what you can get. Any experience is worth it if you come out of it learning something.

STAY AWAY FROM FAST FOOD!!!!!!!! try something like A RECEPTIONIST. you will never forgive yourself down the road if you get into the fast food or retail world. plus your resume will look so much better having had a nice professional first job than a crappy one.

If you're a teen-ager, the best job for you would be McDonald's because they are always hiring and they teach you a lot about retail work. The hours are flexible and that's a plus if you're in school. There is most likely one near you in case you don't have a car.

well, you have to be careful where u want to work....i worked in dunkin donuts and that can even be hectic....any job starts out hard but it gets easier in time so in that sense any job would be ok....
you could work at the mall...somewhere like jcpenny's or macy's.....dont make it too much of a popular store...can get crowded.......

Don't work at any corporations. But I would try working at a coffee shop [not Starbucks]. You should go and try working at any place that isn't to much pressure, something that you can also use as a well reference. ;)

My first job was Mervyn's (dept. store like sears, JCPenny, Khol's). It was a good atmosphere and the people were fun. It was a great first job because I would only get about 20 hours a week. Once I got out of high school, i quit because i needed more hours (the only Con).

You can always work for me... Its a *VERY* dangerous line of work, for some people its deadly... Anyway, the pay is exceptional and you get to pick your hours, sort of. You get to travel the world and even when you're "on the job", its like a vacation.
Think about it.

I suggest you work somewhere that has products that you like/enjoy/use.
Knowing and liking what you're selling makes work a lot more fun.
Plus most places have pretty good and sometimes fantastic employee discounts.
Remember that the interview isn't just the prospective employer checking you out - it's also your chance to check out whoever is going to be managing you.
Look around at the other people working in the store before you even apply. See what their attitudes are like, if the store is clean and if the workers care about doing a good job.
A great boss can make a horrible job tolerable and a bad boss can make a great job a nightmare. Who you're working with is just if not more important than where you're working.
Key point for retail though is working with a product or products that you like and enjoy.

Try to land a customer service type of job, perhaps a phone rep for Comcast or AT&t Global net. Some of the benefits are good at these companies, plus you wont feel like an unskilled burger flipper type.It may just be the thing to build confidence within you to keep your work ethic strong along with your general self-esteem.
These types of companies also 'sweeten up' your resume when you update it.A major well known company listed on your previous work experience like NEXTEL gives a better impression on your next interview rather than listing something like cashier at Old Country Buffet.
Good luck, keep up the good fight, aim high.
