How do I tell him I'm leaving my position?

I am an administrative assistant for a Financial Consultant (Stock Broker) and we are a great team. I've worked for him for about a year and a half. About four months ago, I moved further from my job and am currently driving 55 miles one way. I have been looking for a new position and recently found one and accepted it. I am to start on January 22nd. I still have yet to give my current boss my notice that I am resigning from my position. The problem is that him and I are also pretty close friends outside of work and I have gotten to know his family well. I am excited about the new position, but I feel awful that I'm leaving because he's so good to me. I just can't keep traveling so far, and I'm happy living where I'm at. What should I include in in my letter of resignation to him and when should I give it to him?????

First, do not give him less than 2 weeks notice - it's unprofessional and you sound like a professional. You should probably schedule a one on one at the office and thank him for the opportunity and let him know that you have learned a lot. Let him know you were offered a position in another company or agency and that you have accepted, making that his 2+ notice. Make sure you write a nice letter and Cc human resoucres. If it is a competitor, it is usually customary to give you 2 weeks pay and immediate dismissal. That way, you will get 2 week vacation before you start, get your mind together for the new challenges. Explain that you've enjoyed working with him, but the commute since you've moved is too much. Tell him as soon as possible so he can find a replacement and you can help train that person.

Tell him the truth before New Years. . .give him your gratitude. . .and your contact information if he still wants to be friends with you. . .

You should tell him verbally, then follow it up w/ the letter so he's not in shock. I'm sure he'll understand that you need to do what's best for you. Let him know at least 2 weeks b4 the 22nd. Best of luck to you.

If you're friendly with the man, then tell him personally and tell him exactly what you just told us here. Be honest and upfront. After you're done talking to him give him your letter of notice so he can add it to your file. He's a businessman, and obviously a family man, so he will understand your reasons.

You letter should be short and sweet. However, tell him privately what happened and that you appreciate having worked with him.
