Can I start a labor union within a company at which i am no longer an employee?
Asked by alister s
I used to work for a very large company that mistreated employees. I have ideas to improve the company to make it a more comfortable experience for employees nationwide.
I want to know if i can create a union for this company even if I am no longer employed with them.
ALSO, are labor unions required to be non-profit?

Yes, you can start your own labor union. But keep in mind that a labor union needs lots of resources like cash, employees, lawyers, etc. I'm sure there is a Union for the industry in question. Give them a call and see what they can do for you.
As to the labor unions being non-profit, lol. Please understand that many Labor Unions are a business of it self.
Good Luck.

Not really, because you have to be there to get the other employees interested in your plan, you may want to go through someone you know that still works there, and make sure it is a person you can TRUST! All company employees are not savvy to the aspect of forming a union, but on the other hand, the law say's that all employees of a company have the right to a bargaining unit hence the UNION. Technically they have to vote a union in or out. If you go for it and there is enough interest, meaning at least 65 to 70 % of the people are for forming a union, then contact a local that covers that type of workforce, they can help you from there on. The reason I say 65 to 70% pro union is because you don't want to waste a lot of time trying to get people to sign up, if they are not being treated fairly and equally across the board, they should see that a union can help them. You can save a lot of time and eliminate a lot of uneeded hassle from the corporate side, and chances are corporate will fight it to begin with. Remember this " A union is only as strong as it's members "

Sort of. You can found a labor union. It does not matter where or if you work to do so, although to be recognised as a labor union for tax purposes, you will need others to be founding members to make up an exceutive board.
In order for your union to represent the workers at your former place of employment, a majority of current employees will have to decide to join your union and be willing to fight for recognition through a government sponsored election or other means.
There is a special tax status for labor unions that is a type of non-profit. If you do not meet the requirements of that tax status, the organization would be required to pay taxes on all income.
It also may affect your ability to have the union recognized as a bona fide labor union by the government aganecies that regulate labor law.
