LiSa maRiiE
Quit, or hope I get fired?
Asked by LiSa maRiiE
About 8 weeks ago I started working part-time at a local coffeehouse. I'm 16 and it's my first real job. But I've gotten really busy with sports and my hours have been drastically cut back. And lately, my boss has scheduled me to work on days I don't usually work or directly after practices when I'm exhausted, but doesn't call and let me know that I'm scheduled to work on a weird day. Should I just not show up when I didn't know I was supposed to work and get fired, or quit and look for a higher paying job? (I only get $6.50/hour)

Best Answer:
Quit so that you don't have it on your job record history that you got fired. ;)

A:
It is never idea to be fired. But how are you going to go to work if you don't know when to be there?? That wouldn't be anything you could be fired for.

A:
Don't exhaust yourself. I give you so much credit for working hard! If your boss isn't communicating with you and there's no understanding of when you're supposed to work - it's not your fault. God Bless!!

Give a two week notice and quit and look for something that works better around your schedule don't get fired then you can't really use it as a reference and your next job you apply for might not hire you because you got fired at your last one.

Why not explain to your boss what your situation is and if you can't come to an arrangement that works then resign.

A:
Getting fired is never a good thing. In your situation I would first ask, do you really enjoy your job? Then if you do I would try to talk to the manager and get things straightened out. If that doesn't work then put in a two week notice and begin searching for another job, if you have not had any problems with work then you can use this last job as a reference for getting a new job which will help the process out a lot.

quit...NEVER try to get fired!! people wont hire u in the future if u get fired...trust me...4 jobs wouldnt hire me cuz i got fired from a bagboy job a few years ago...

A:
Getting fired, oddly enough, has a benefit. You get to file for unemployment. But since you've only worked for 8 weeks I don't think you'd qualify. And even if you stayed on and tried to quit, then get a better job, if you're thinking of using your old boss as a reference, think again. If he's the dip stick he/she sounds like, although legally they're not supposed to give you a bad reference, all bosses know the tell tale signs. He/she could say: "Oh Johnny, yeah I guess you could say he worked for me for a few weeks. I have nothing else to say about him besides he worked for me for 8 weeks. No other comments."

Do you like the job? If you do talk to your boss and tell him your concerns if you don't give notice and explain your reasons always good to leave on a positive note.

A:
Personally, I would quit. It sounds better than getting fired.

A:
Quit. You have a good reason to quit work due to conflicts and unreasonable changes to your hours. Right now, you can quit and you will have the high ground. You will take some heat for quitting, but the shift changes are reason enough and you did work there for two months, which is a lot for 16 and a first job, these days. If you get fired for not showing up, you will always have this bad reference hanging out there to be discovered, even if you don't put it on your resume. Quit and all they can say is that you left.

If you are into sports and that is more important to you and your job is getting in the way of your sports, I would quit. If you really need this job, you need to speak to your boss and let him know when you are available and stand your ground. If he isnt trying to hear that, then you have no choice. Trust me, there are other jobs that pay the same, you should have no trouble. But I would try to negotiate something prior to quitting, because you might need a reference.

it would be best NOT to have a FIRED on your record, even though its really not a big deal, if you never use them as a reference! Best thing to do would be to give them at least a week notice. Its the best most respectful thing to do and they will RESPECT YOU for it! We all have those we dont like or who are hard to work with no matter WHERE we go in life....sorry but its true

Remember school is your first priority right now. I know having a job and money seems exciting right now, but you have all of your adult lif to work. You should talk to your boss to see if he can work with your school schedule and give you set hours to work. If he is unable to do that try working only on weekend somewhere else, and remember there are always peple who need reliable babysitters. Good luck and don't lose your focus in school!

Quitting a job because of educational reasons cannot and will not go against any future employment opportunities. Chances are in the event a future employer checks with your present employer your present boss will be history. Slinging burgers or whatever is not normally a career path. Your education should be your primary focus.

Quit, and find another job in another industry, preferably. This doesn't have anything to do with you being 16. I've been in F&B for 20+ years, and much the same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. It's just the nature of the beast.

You're 16, how much do you think you are going to make? And what kind of job do you think you are going to get at 16? Typically, managers make schedules 1 week to 2 weeks ahead in retail. Is that not the case with yours? It seems unusual that your boss would just post sporatic schedules. As an employee it is your responsibility to check the schedule. Retail schedules are not the same as office schedules. In an office you are set to normal hours. Retail can have you working all kinds of strange days and hours. If you plan on staying retail, get used to it. You should be responsible and tell your manager in advance what your sports and activity schedule is for school. If you know, after a game, you may be excessively tired, then ask her to not schedule you after games. If you can't handle working, then you need to give her two weeks notice, to allow her time to find someone to replace you. This is the standard, respectable time frame in which employers expect to receive notice. By being responsible and thoughtful, you will be able to use the company as a reference for the next job.

If you can't do the job because of your class schedule and sports activity then don't work. If you want to work around your class and activities, take the hours that's favorable to you. You need to make your schedule to your boss. He does not know your daily schedule if you won't tell him. Don't decide to not to show up to work. Never do that. That will cause to you burn bridges. You never should destroy any relationship you create. Networking is crucial for future no matter where those network lies. In most cases, bosses understand. You are a student, your school comes first. If things does not go well, at worst you will be fired but you won't burn any bridges. If you want to quit, let your boss know you having trouble and give him a week notice (usually two).

Burn the place down.....there problem solved. Seriously though if you are unhappy then give your boss (2) weeks notice and explain why you are leaving. This is the mature and professional way to handle it and it will give you experience for handling jobs in the future. Good luck (I was only joking about the arson) :)

I've been there and I know how you feel. I'd bring it up to your boss, who has to understand. You are only 16 and you do have priorities like school and extra currics. I would suggest taking a hard copy schedule of your practice days and days you suggest would be better for you to work. You should be able to come to a compromise. If not, then maybe you should quit and look for another job. I definietly would not suggest just not showing up, because that is going on your future apps. Even if you wouldn't include it, a new boss could totally find out (your previous boss walks into your new place, for example). And just because another job is higher paid, doesn't make it better. $6.50 is awesome for a 16 year old. I only earned $4.50 at your age, so I'd also suggest to not complain about your wage (which would not look good for ANY boss. Good luck!

The best thing to do, especially since this is your first job, is to give your two weeks notice. Just be upfront and honest. Tell them that the schedule is not working out with your after school activities. You are young and anyone that doesn't realize how important school is and the extra activities that come along with it isn't worth working for. When you are ready to apply for another job, all you have to do is be directly honest and tell them your boss was working you ridiculous hours and you couldn't keep up with your school work. This will make you much more respected from everyone. Don't just up and quit. It looks so bad and you also will have a guilt trip hanging on your back, plus you will always have to worry about running into the person that had to pull the double shift for you. You could even sit down and have a talk with your boss and tell them that the sooner they find a replacement for you the better. That way you won't have to put up with them for two weeks. If you really want to quit, make sure you stick to your guns and don't let them talk you into something you really don't want to do. School is always more important than a job at your age. Enjoy the fun while it lasts. You will have your whole life to work. Good Luck!!

Be up front and quit. If you just don't show up, you leave everyone in a bind and earn a name. If you quit and tell them why, you can leave on a good note.
