It all depends. Do you like cooking? If so I would go for it im only 16 and I plan on training as a cook and then later in life becoming a chef. I would personally go in for a cook first to acquire experience then once you are well experienced in cooking apply for a chef as a chef requires more knowledge and skill.

It is a tough career because you are usually working when everyone else is relaxing and playing. Thursday, Friday, Sat, ans Sunday...if you make it to the top of your profession then you have a chance at managing your schedule better.
There are some great rewards. Most importantly doing something you truly enjoy.
I have worked in the industry for years as a Manager and find like everything else is has its pros and cons.

If you have ANY other skills, I would develop them first (I was offered this tidbit of advice nearly 20 years ago by some mid-level chefs-- I didn't listen).
If you'd care for a good rundown of how sleazy the food & beverage industry is, check out www.bitterwaitress.com among others.
This is a very sexist & racist occupation as well, so if that may apply to you, BEWARE!!!

It is a fantastic career choice! You have got to love these..
1) to cook
2) to be on your feet for 12-14hr per day
3) give up you weekends...
4) managing 30-100 different attitudes daily.
5) MONEY!
The money is great.....but I never have any time to enjoy it!
It is a profession that you really have to be passionate about. It is an art of time management. Great luck to you!
