Special Effects Makeup Artist?

Ok, I just turned 18. I am of course starting to think about jobs. My family is telling me i should go for something practical. But i want a career, not a mediocre job. So i was wanting to do something that makes me happy. Horror movies are my life, i LOVE working with makeup as well. So i was thinking that my ideal job would be as a Special effects makeup artist. But i have NO CLUE where to get started. Like what classes would i even need to take. I assume that regular classes at a beauty school would be of no help. But i can't exactly re-locate to L.A. or UK. But i live in Wilmington North Carolina, Where lots of movies are filmed. I recently found a place not too far from me that is a special effects makeup studio. So that is something to modivate me. But i have no clue how to actually learn everything i need to know. So ANY info on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There are special effects makeup classes offered at colleges who offer theater programs. Look and see if your local colleges offer a program.
