There may be different tasks office to office, but generally you will be answering a multi-line phone (and generally they say not to allow the phone to ring more than 3 times before answering), scheduling and cancelling appointments, perhaps taking insurance information and making one or two copies (depending how many charts there are for a patient as there may be a second one as an extra) of the insurance cards unless they have someone separate for handling those matters. You may have to start new patient charts and do some filing and perhaps some faxing and photocopying. You may also have to deal with checking in a patient in-person while the phone rings simultaneously and trying to take care of the call first unless the office has a certain procedure which they just may. And on that note, It's best to ask as many questions as one wants to as 'there are no stupid questions' :)
Each dr's office may run differently which is why you should find out everything you need to know, thinking of questions before you even go into work and even while they are orienting (presuming that they are ;) you. They may recommend that you read up about medical terminology to get a familiarity of certain terms. And to feel more confident in the medical office environment, how about learning about the human body and body systems including the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), respiratory system, urinary system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system, integumentary (skin -- largest organ) system, (sorry if I left any out). And you won't have to know the technicalities as a doctor or nurse would, but it may help you to feel more comfortable and help with overall competence while at work as well as patient relations. And don't be hesitant about writing instructions down on paper. One can brief their notes later on that day if need be.
