I think that's awesome. I worked on a farm for about 3 years in high school, and had a lot of fun. But I know what you mean about people making jokes and stuff..... only people who worked with me didn't make jokes. My other friends thought it was nasty because it smelled bad and stuff (we had swine and cattle), but I will never regret it. When people think "farmer" they tend to think uneducated, dirty redneck, but they don't realize the reason the nice clean grocery stores are always stocked with food is because somebody, somewhere is farming that food! So if that's what you want to do in life, let me first say congratulations (many people have no idea what they want to do with their lives, even as adults) and second, GO FOR IT!

You need to talk to a few farmers now. Get their views. Farms are factories, whose produce prices are often dictated by the big supermarket chains. The "Golden age" has long since passed. You have to buy or hire expensive kit, pay large vet bills, keep up to date on legislation, get up in the dark, go to bed in the dark, never have a holiday, and if you get ill, the bank could foreclose on you.

Not if you want to be overworked and underpayed. Work most of the day's hours 7 days a week and then get exploited by the supermarket buyers. Start thinking more practical and less romantic, then make a decision.

Farmers produce the most valuable product. If that lifestyle appeals to you and your not afraid of hard work go for it.

Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as you go in to it with your eyes open. I believe it's a tough job, more of a vocation, actually. Perhaps check out your nearest agricultural college. Some of your mates might laugh, but if you made as much money as Bernhard Matthews, you'd have the last laugh.

its a very worthy profession to be involved in. in the uk farming has been in decline for many years and things are only getting worse with the stranglehold that the supermarkets have over the industry. consider how cheap imports of meat and dairy products from the old soviet bloc countries will affect the uk industry. even defra is mirroring the industrys demise by closing more of its offices and sacking workers. Horticulture makes more sense.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to be a farmer, but as a farmer's kid, I'm going to warn you that it's a LOT of work. It's hard work 24/7, almost no vacation, and it will usually feel like everything is going against you. Your animals will depend on you, so you can't slack off. If you think you're up to it, congrats! If you have doubts, maybe you should start out working as a hired hand on a different farm so you can get a real taste for the work.
