What career paths exist in the security field?
Asked by PeguinBackPacker
I know there is the average security guard. Then there are bodyguards, electronic surveillance, bounty hunting, law enforcement, goverment work, private investigator, computer security and I am betting there some more I missed. What are they?

There's alot. First of all, private security is nothing more then the criminal justice field being privatized. That being said there are enforcement jobs in the private sector, there are private prisons, investigations, and some even provide services to courts. Jobs in these fields include baliffs, guards, correctional officers, private investigators, safety enforcement, access control, parking enforcement, foot and vehicle patrol, many are trained with first aid or are licensed medics to handle medical situations, some larger companies like Pinkerton actually provide firefighters, there is really to many to list. Private security goes way past the security guard now a days. I've heard of someone hiring a patrol company to check up on their house, water the plants, and walk the dogs while their on vacation. The private security field is very flexible, and the managers of these companies will bend over backwards for their customers just to keep the contract, get a new contract, or basically get paid more. Some cities actually contract with guard companies to check parking meters and write parking citations.

If you want to do more research on career paths in the security field, there is a cool tool where you can type in a job title, see the career path and the salaries for each job title. It is at http://www.payscale.com/gigzig.aspx Also, PayScale.com has a blog with interviews of real people in different professions. Here is a link to an interview with a private investigator team that also does bounty hunting: http://blogs.payscale.com/salarystories/2007/01/annual_salary_p.html Hope that helps, Assistant to Dr. Salary
