Career Questions and Answers
I was thinking today I have never seen or heard of a female plumber, electrician or heavy equipment operator?
Asked by Auntie Friction
I wonder why that is? There doesn't seem to be a physical reason for women not to pursue those lucrative, in demand, careers.
Thanks everybody - I like hearing about the exceptions to my assertion, but you must admit, Women in skilled trades are very scarce - like 1%?

More often they work with larger companies in the commercial or industrial sector. The larger companies are more inclined to be of the equal opportunity persuasion.

Well, my sister is a stationary engineer, in charge of servicing big steam boilers for power generation...Maybe most women are directed into more traditional careers and want to leave the "dirty work" to the men...i mean where you get your hands dirty.

A couple of years ago we had a problem with our cable. The technician that came was a woman. She even had to climb the telephone pole out back to check the junction box. She was good!

The trades are a physically demanding job. College is required to be licensed.. The hours are long and sometimes 7 days a week according to the demand... Electricians hang off rafters and high ladders to string wire.. Heavy equipment operators is an out side job and require special schooling to drive a D8 Dozier..and appropriate driving license.... Plumbers can be up to their elbows in crap to get the job done. Run pipe in new consruction or old make bends and soldier connectons.....
