Can a chemical engineer work as a construction engineer and end up in operations managment ?
Asked by planck12
I am a junior chemical engineer who has worked for a year in instrumention but did not enjoy it too much was very plain. But got an opportunity now to work as a contruction/estimating engineer in the oil and gas side of things. Would a construction/estimating position help me get more involved with process engineering down the road and perhaps operations managment 20 years down. Is it good to take this path. I do not seem to get a break as a pure process engineer at this point (my grades are not the greatest) and usually the bigger companies like shell etc look at grades before they give anyone any sort of change. regards

It is always good to gain as many different experiences, may jobs need the same core skills - the ability to learn, get along with people, manage adversity, and the pure technical skills. No one can tell you if that path will work for you - but if it's an interesting job, I recommend you take it. I've been in IT for 20+ years, but have done so many different jobs, I use my past experirences to work on the next one.
