Diesel Mechanic as a second career? What is your experience?
Asked by jvstiniann
I'm looking for a huge career change. I'm a graphic designer of 10 years and I can't stand being in an office anymore. I was looking at auto mechanics but it seems saturated and I would never make that much. I'm considering diesel mechanics which seems like a better choice. Eventually moving towards Marine diesel engines.
What is your experience? Decent career? Where could I go after several years of experience??

I was a mechanic for 15 years, done racing, restauration, motorcycles.. import/export airbrushing, spraying custom building... In the end I gave it up as I couldn't stand the people who can never deal with motors.
They do all kind of cruel stuff to them, lol and they know it all as well, till they blow them up and then YOU have to fix them QUICK! Phone calls at 3AM to go get them started as they can't start the thing they just gave me 10 grand for.
You get the money but the money still belongs to them for a long time, and the machine will be yours forever, or at least till they sell it. They'll be calling you as you are "the man" lol.
That's my experience..
I simply gave it all up, now I work with computers and have as little human contact as I can :)
btw, here's a good aptitude test http://gsx1.com/free-aptitude-test.html it's fun and you never know what it'll come up with!
perhaps you just need a few months holidays in the outdoors to make you want the office again :)
good luck.
