Writing sample for a public relations firm?
Asked by gurl
I am applying for a position as an assistant at a public relations firm. One of the requirements is to send in a writing sample. Would a press release be the right way to go or should I add something besides this.

Best Answer:
the writing sample is to give them an idea of how well you can write (content, proper grammar, spelling, etc.) as long as it demonstrates your ability to effectively communicate in writing, it shouldn't matter too much what specific form of writing you submit (within reason - a technical scientific paper would be inappropriate). a press release is fine; other choices could be a newspaper or magazine article you've written, a short paper for a class, etc.

A press release would be fine, but you can also do some pieces of idea examples that never were published as well. They are likely looking for your thought and idea style so give them information that shows you can org. ideas and concepts etc.

A press release is a great idea! You could even do it about yourself - using the 3rd person: I wanted to use your profile, but your profile is exactly like mine - nothing there. Not because we didn't try do a profile, but because, speaking for myself, I just don't know how. Please forgive me, but as an example, I’ll use myself: HEADLINE: “FLASH! Ron Berue, a Top Contributor at Yahoo! Answers, Enters Level 4!” Press Release Body: “Since June 13 of this year, he has 580 total answers! Among those answers are 134 Best Answers - in various categories from Food and Drink to Education, Real Estate, Business and Finance, Investing, Credit and a few more . . ." Thank you for asking your question. I enjoyed taking the time to answer it. You did a great job - not only for your information, but for every other person interested in reading my answer. Thanks to everyone for reading my answer. I wish you well! VTY, Ron Berue Yes that is my real last name!
