I want to be a technician at a car dealership, where do I start?
Asked by baodinh3190
I'm 17 years old right now and about to enter my 12th year in high school. I am really interested in cars and am eager to learn how they function, but I never really had experience working on them before. For a career, I would like to be a technician at a car dealership but I don't know where to start. Is it it better to go to college to learn and obtain a degree or go straight to trade school? If you suggest going to college first, what kind of courses do I need to take? After college/trade school, are there any other programs or classes that I may need to take? I also would like to know how difficult it is to be one. Thanks a lot!

My suggestion would be to go straight to trade school. That's where you will learn most of what you need to know about the hands-on learning of repairing cars, etc. College would be good for learning maybe accounting or book-keeping to keep books in your own business etc one day, but not for the actual hands-on experience that you need to repair them. I had a boyfriend who went to trade school and learned auto mechanics and became certified in trade school, graduated and then went on to become quite successful at being a automotive technician. He finally ended up owning his own business after a few years but did not have the knowledge of how to keep books, which is required in running a business. That's where the college courses would have helped alot. Those could have been taken at night and would have freed him up to work during the day and then attend college courses at night. Anyways, go to trade school to learn the ins and outs of auto mechanics. College will not benefit you in that area. Good luck to you! I hope it's everything you want it to be and you become very good at it and successful!

You posted in: Careers & Employment > Health Care > It probably came up if you searched for technician. My first suggestion would be to pay attention! Being eager to learn is one thing; as someone who drives a car whose car you might work on, being observant is EXTREMELY important! Call some of the auto dealerships in your area and ask what they look for in a new worker in the area you're interested in. You don't have to give your name! Just call and ask!
