Event planning for others is all about networking and having GREAT communication skills. One thing to remember about planning events for others is that when you contract with them you accept 100% responsibility for their event. Anything that is good OR bad about is your fault! I've had situations where I truly thought I had a firm grasp on what a client was looking for in their event only to be told after it was completed that i'd missed the mark completely! I will tell you this, planning is so much fun and it can be so very very rewarding when you have a wedding or conference go off without a hitch. . .or when you do a child's birthday party and you can see the excitment in their face is just incredible!!!
You will need to check with your Secretary of State as far as licensing requirements as a planner in your state. Every state is different. One example of this is that in Illinois an event planner is required to liquor liability and dram shop insurance if they will be working on any event(s) that involve alcohol on site. In Iowa there is no such requirement. Crazy but true. But definately check things out for real.
If you enjoy working with people, are organized, and are willing to rise to the challenge of "reading" the minds of your clients, GO FOR IT!!!
Best of luck to you!!
Did event planning for several years. Did events ranging from private home parties (anniversaries, BD parties, etc) to conferences with over 2,000 attendees.

You should start as an intern in an event planning company. By paying your dues now and proving that you have what it takes, the company will take notice and offer you an entry-level position or even an assistant event planner to start off with.
