Career Questions and Answers

Michele
I'm thinking of becoming a nurse at 38.?
Asked by Michele
I gave up my career goals once we started to have kids. Now that we have three and they're all in school, I'm thinking of entering nursing school. However, I'm worried about doing it at my age. Any thoughts?

My grandfather started a career in nursing at the age of 60. He loved every minute of it, and was a cardiac care nurse until forced to retire around 10 years later or so. I say go for it! In 10 years you'll be 48 and if you don't go for it, you STILL won't be a nurse. Good luck!

That's wonderful. We need more nurses in the world to take care of folks. Congrats on wanting to get your career going. You're still young so I highly doubt your age will hurt your chances of finding a good job. Just stay focused and do your thing. Good Luck!

We need more people like you; mature and caring. It is a great career and you will never be without a job.

Why not? I have 3 also. I feel your pain! Go for it. It'll be easier than when you were younger. You'll be a better student, more responsible, more mature, and you want that degree. That's half the battle. My wife has an associate's and her RN. She gets pais the same as a nurses with BSNs. Good luck.

Age is not an issue. Even if it were, at 38, you're still young from a career perspective. Ask yourself, though, why you want to become a nurse. Is it because you want to help others or are you attracted by the flexible hours and relatively decent pay? I would seriously suggest doing your investigation. Talk to some nurses and find out how they like the field, what they like and don't like about it. The reason I suggest this is that the field has a notoriously low job satisfaction rate and nurses often complain that they are treated poorly by the physicians they work with. None of this may be an issue if you are looking into the career solely as a means to help others. But it's always best to be well-informed before making a big career change.

GO FOR IT! Just because you are older doesn't mean you are dead! Go after your career. One thing I can tell you about is where I go to school. I go online at Axia College. It is through the University of Phoenix. They actually have a nursing program. You could go to school at home while the kids are at school. It is flexible as heck and really fast. You save money on gas and books (all the books are just under $80 for each class...which is covered by financial aid). Or is tradition school is more your thing, set up a date to talk to an academic counselor and they will help you every step of the way! but YOU SHOULD GO FOR IT! Do what makes you happy. And Good Luck!

Go for it!! it's never to late to chase after your goals. My mum used to be a nurse and then she gave up her job when she had my sister and hasn't worker for years now she wants to go back and do further study with the nursing degree (cos it's been a while) and she's like in her in her 50s. 38 is still very young to do anything- If your're scared about the whole study thing don't be because they provide you with heaps of support-If you don't go for it you may regret it.

Once you give up trying new things you have stopped living. Your never to old and it's never to let. The end results is meaningless, it's the effort put forth that matters.
