How does one get out of a retail career?
Asked by Robert B
I have been in retail for most of my life. I am a manager and wish to get out of retail. I enjoy working with others, have a marketing degree but do not enjoy sales. I cannot afford to take a pay cut. I am looking for a career change or at least one where I do not have to work retail hours. Any suggestions? To add, my marketing degree is from a four year college. I would not mind getting back into marketing. I work for an advertising firm once but I found that you bascially had to kiss the clients arse and pretend to be something you are not.

You need to work on a MBA in a specialty to become a consultant..

Advertising? What about staying in retail, but in a different angle? Like marketing for a large company. Then you wouldn't have to leave retail totally, but you'd be able to better use your degree. How high is your degree? You can, with a master's degree, teach community college courses in business. Education is a great field with great hours. You get to work with people, make good money (higher ed jobs tend to pay more than K-12 jobs), and have great hours. What about with a magazine or newspaper? They hire marketing people. It's hard to help with this one, because I can't tell if you want to work with your degree or if you don't mind leaving it all together.

If you're talking about a store manager, then it's not worth your time staying there. You can still be in retail (more like corporate) and have fun. For example, instead of being a store manager, check to see if your employer have any openings in the corpoarte field (marketing, advertising). If so, apply for it. Aside from that, you don't have to stay with the same company, look for a different one. It's all about taking risks and what you want. When you see what you want, grab it.
