Well if you are looking at the Autodesk brand, there are many options. You should decide between these 2:
If you want to design in 2D - AutoCAD
If you want to design in 3D - Inventor
For 2D: AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical are spin-offs of AutoCAD that include some automated commands and symbols for mechanical and electrical design. You can always start with AutoCAD then upgrade to those packages later, but I would recommend starting with the basic package since there is so much to learn.
For 3D: There are many competing softwares you could also look at - Solidworks, SolidEdge, Unigraphics, Pro/E, Catia, but aside from the first 2 they will do WAY more than you need and cost WAY too much.
Finally: I use Inventor since I need great 3D details, and have used it to design both buildings and small manufactured parts, and have found that it is great for any project since it is not industry specific, like an architecture program. You will be happy with either, I have used both AutoCAD and Inventor for many years.

I would definitely suggest mechanical auto-cad, but suggest auto-cad LT for start up ideas. Make sense?
