Is 25 to old to be a waitress & start a Hospitality career?
Asked by alias_young
I haven't waitressed since I was 22. Besides 4 years of farm work I have only ever had a waitressing job for 6 months. I left work to have a child. I have 2 kids now and am able to start full time night work and 3 days full time day work in a few weeks. I have a Diploma in Business- which I did while being a stay at home mum. I want to work my way into a senior position in Hospitality. My mother in law is 60 and says I am too old, and my husband agrees with her. My 17 year old sister is starting a career in Hospitality soon and I feel so old next to her. She is encouraging and says 30 is the new 20, 40 is the new 30....We live in a town of about 100 000 and sometimes I wonder if it is only because we live in a small town that my husband and mother in laws attitudes are so negative. I don't want to stay home and make babies. Am I too old? I am only 25 and sometimes I feel like if I lived in the city I wouldnt feel so limited in what I can do with my life.

You are not too old. and waitressing is a great job if you want a lot of time to be home with the kids. After I had my son (at age 26) I went back into waitressing; waited tables nights which pretty much let me be a stay-at-home mom (I'd go in at 5 or 6 pm after prepping dinner for baby and husband), work until midnight or 1 am, go home and crash for a few hours and then get the whole day home with my son. It was very convenient for that season in my life. Plus, where else can you make that much money on flexible shifts?

A:
Absolutely not! There are professional career restaurant-iers and there are artists and persons in transition of all ages who wait tables for money. The only set-back to waiting tables is not physically being able todo the job. My last fine dining waiter gig there were people from age 23 to age 55 on staff. Age isn't really an issue in the industry, just knowledge and experience.

Hey of course your not too old, If that's what you want to do then go for it. It sounds like you would be good at that kind of career. 25 is still very young dear, so don't let people hold you back. I wish you a lot of luck.

If 25 is old than I am going back to the Jurassic period where I belong. Good grief. Tell your husband he is supposed to be your main supporter in this life and if can't do it you'll find someone who can. Tell your mother in law to bugger off and quit contaminating your husband with her negative attitude. Better yet, find out what these people have against working mothers. Does hubby feel that if you make your own money you'll be in a better position to leave him? Does mum-in-law think that hubby won't get his socks ironed if you go to work outside the home? If you let others impose limits on you at 25 you will find out what it means to be "too old" when you are 70 and look back on your life and wish you had done everything differently. Doing what gives you fulfillment and satisfaction (as long as it's legal and ethical) will make you a better mother, wife, daughter-in-law, and human being. Now go get 'em!
