In order to be a professional social worker, as defined by the NASW (National Association of Social Workers), you must earn your BSW (bachelor of social work) or MSW (master of social work) degree. Social workers are typically paid a modest salary, but the personal and professional rewards are significant if your passion is working with people and enriching lives. If you are going into Social Work for the money, you may want to reconsider your career path. However, if you want to make a difference in the world and love working with people, Social Work may just be for you.
I am a professional Social Worker, holding a Master of Social Work degree with more than 5 yrs. professional experience.

Usually a degree in Social Work requires 4 years of college. It requires a lot of emotional involvement in not-so-pleasant parts of people's lives. They don't start out making a lot of money considering the amount of time and energy spent on the job. You will probably be required to make home visits, yes, even at night when you'd rather be at home. You can start with a good State job and a decent salary, but expect a pretty heavy workload. You can be a counselor at a high school, things like that. It'd be better if you took that extra year and get a Masters in Social Work and have your own business as a Clinical Social Worker then you can pretty much charge what you want per session.

Generally speaking: Social Workers work long hours, they do thankless work that nobody else wants to do, get very little respect, and receive relatively low pay for the education required. In most states, a Bachelors in Social Work is the minimum requirement. But many folks end up with their Masters in order to advance in the field. The Masters program either has a Clinical focus or a management focus. The Clinical one is probably the most commonly used route to become a Licensed Counselor in the US. The Management focus turns out to be very similar to an MBA. Salary as a BSW varies widely, but starting is typically around 25,000 annually.
