Career Questions and Answers
where do I go to?
Asked by Junior
I want to build up a career as a multi media mongul...(video/film making, printing /publishing, advertising/graphics) I know this is vast, but can someone tell me a one stop shop/school that can equip me to realise this dream.
I cant go full time as I have a job that takes care of me now.

Step One - learn to use the tools. Polish your language, so you can write clearly (and correctly). Read good writers, and learn different kinds of writing, and what makes good writing in each. In other words - read newspapers, read movie scripts, read books.
Learn the language of film and video. Know the history of the medium - how it developed, and what the keys are in film making today. What makes today's script so very different from the film scripts of even ten and certainly 30 years ago? If you don't know where the industry has come from, you don't know where it is, much less where it is going.
Learn something about basic graphic design - layout, tracking elements, basic techniques for creating pages with and without a computer.
Much of that you can do on your own, with a library and initiative. IN doing that, you will find areas that particularly interest you, authors or schools or projects that catch your imagination - and if you follow up on them, you will find your own path.
My problems with schools and programs that promise success in these fields is - if these guys are so good, why aren't THEY making it big, rather than teaching in a small school. Learn from the professionals, the people who have already made it.
Finally - don't worry about making it big. Find what you love, what you do well, and do it because you love it. In almost every instance, people who have become successful are doing what they love. They are people who have followed their passion, not their greed. If you make it, terrific. If you don't - you are still doing what you love, and that's pretty good.
