What does it mean when an employer wants an employee to have switchboard experience for a receptionist job?

I am trying to get a receptionist job at an security company, but I dont know what they mean having switchboard experience.

If you know how to talk on a phone, you will probably be able to learn a switchboard. It's just a phone system with multiple lines. Each one is different, but pretty easy to learn.

That is an outdated term meaning telephone answering experience.

To have worked a phone with alot of lines, handeling many calls at once, putting people on hold, transfer calls to other phone lines, etc.

When you work in an office, many times they have more than one phone line ringing at the same time. It means can you answer the line, transfer it to the correct place and get back to the phones. It's not too hard to learn.

Swithchboard experience means knowledge in operating the telephones like PABX - i.e. u should know how to connect the incoming and outgoing call through switchboard - exchange.

To have the ability to answer a multi-line phone, be able to place one or more callers on hold while transfering thier call to another line. Swithboard is an old term, still used for multi-lined phone systems.
