Any advice for a 2004 MBA trying to get into management consulting?
Asked by civeng
I did a summer at McKinsey back in 2003 and have been doing an entrepreneurial venture (or adventure) since I graduated back in June 2004. I would like to get into consulting or corporate strategy and need advice on how to sell my case to consulting firms. I have no desire to work for McKinsey though.

A consultant ought to have some valuable information and experience to offer, and I'm sorry if this hurts your feelings, but if you're a recent MBA you don't HAVE any experience. Here's what you need to do: get some. Get out there and work for some companies that do whatever it is that you studied (finance, research, manufacturing, etc.). Then, when you've gained some insight, wisdom and knowledge of what REALLY happens in corporations, you can call yourself a consultant. After all, that's what consultants sell...experience.

Good luck with ur venture, Well u need lot of clients..so it is important for you to build contacts, or re-visit contacts that u already have..start writing articles/case studies for any management journals..and if possible..tie up with some management institutes for guest lectures, etc..that way you can launch yourself on a much wider platform..from where you will be noticed by the corporate arena..
