The school bus drivers at our location want to form a union, Is a union good or bad?
Asked by NinetyThreeRedCapri
What are the advantages / disadvantages of a union?
As far as I am concerned I don't make enough as it is. I don't want to have to pay union dues if they won't be able to get us pay raises.
I hope someone has good answers because I need to vote yes or no in a week.

What can a union offer school bus drivers?
(listed in no particular order)
- protection from arbitrary firing
- standard rules for pay raises
- small pay increase that did cover cost of dues
- gave the district a new reasons to "consider" a contractor for services (which would have resulted in no union jobs and a pay cut and loss of benifits, etc)
- more rigid enforcement of rules - no exceptions
- fosters an "us vs them" climate both in driver vs management & pro-union driver vs other drivers instead of a "we are in this together" feeling
- gives the group in power (pro-union) all the power in the union. Those who were not 110% behind the union will have little voice. This is good or bad depending on which group you are in.
Bottom line - it's a crap shoot. It depends on what your specific issues are in your specific department.

A union is good for them-protects there jobs, gets them pay rises etc. It doesn't really affect you as such.

A union will protect you and increase your wages (the dues wont hurt you as bad). You will also have access to health care. You should be able to look up what other organizations the union represents and see their history.
on the bad side, your company could fire all of you before you go union.
