How does a cell phone store make any money?

I see many of them in the malls and all over the place. Everytime I drive by, the store is empty and yet they are able to stay in business despite the heavy cost of rental space. How do they manage to stay in business for so long when it does not seem they are making any business?? Please comment.

they make their money from usage plans, mostly that's why they give phones away for next to nothing because you will agree to pay at least 30-70 bucks a month for the next 2 years.

Also they make a killing off of peripherals. How many times do you either upgrade or replace batteries, headsets, cases, phone covers, phones, et c., et c.
